A Canvas of Ability: CU Artists Shine at NDEAM Art Auction

Alton, Ilinois, (December 18, 2024) – At Challenge Unlimited, we know that art is more than color on a canvas—it’s a powerful expression of ability, perspective, and connection. During National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), in October, we were proud to celebrate two CU artists—Janet G. and Monty Graham—whose work was featured at the Palmetto Goodwill Art Gallery and Sale.  We believe that art, like the holidays, brings people together, and we were thrilled to share the news with them that their art was not only appreciated but that all of their entries sold at the event. It was a joy to be able to present them with a check and gifts for their contributions to the event this season.

The Artists and Their Work

Janet Gentry: Nature’s Light
Janet celebrated her 20th Anniversary at CU this year. She works at our Alton Skills Training Center and serves clients of our community day program. She creates art that feels like an escape into nature’s beauty.

Janet has epilepsy. She has painted since childhood and has spent her entire professional career working in the disability field. She likes to paint landscapes and portraits. Her pieces—like the serene forest scenes and autumn landscapes—invite viewers to pause, reflect, and find peace. Janet’s use of light and detail draws you into a world that feels both tranquil and alive, a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us every day.

When Janet received recognition for her work, her reaction of joy was obvious in both her look of surprise and in her words. “My daughter’s car needed fixing, so this came just in time,” she shared, proving that art can make an impact both on and off the canvas.

Montrell Graham’s Work: Bold and Vibrant
Montrell, from CU’s Operations Team, has worked at Challenge Unlimited under the AbilityOne Contract in South Carolina for over 8 years. His photography is one of his favorite hobbies. He especially likes to capture images of nature and milestone events like weddings and birthday celebrations. He brings energy and passion to his art. His still photography radiates bold colors and strong perspectives, reflecting his unique vision and creativity. Monty’s work reminds us that art is not just about the final image but about the journey of creating and the perspective of how he sees the world—something that resonates deeply during NDEAM.

Why Art Matters

Art has the power to change the way we see the world. For artists like Janet and Monty, it’s more than creativity—it’s about:

  • Expression: Sharing their stories in a way that words can’t capture.
  • Inclusion: Creating opportunities for artists with disabilities to shine.
  • Connection: Inviting others to see ability through a different lens.

At CU, we celebrate these artists not only in October but year-round. Whether through employment opportunities, creative programs, or community events, we’re committed to uplifting voices and talents that deserve to be seen and heard.

Beyond NDEAM

The NDEAM Art Auction brought joy, recognition, and holiday cheer to CU artists, but our mission doesn’t stop here. CU will continue to provide platforms for creativity, growth, and celebration, ensuring that artists like Janet and Monty can share their gifts with the world.

Celebrate with Us

Art brings people together, and ability shines through every stroke, every color, and every story. Let’s keep the celebration going—because inclusion, talent, and opportunity deserve recognition every day.

Share their art. Celebrate their stories. Join us in creating a more inclusive world—one canvas at a time.
