Unsung Heroes of Groundskeeping: Challenge Unlimited Operations Team Shines During Record Snowfall
Essential to the smooth operation of Scott Air Force Base, the men and women of the groundskeeping operations team at Challenge Unlimited take on critical roles that directly support our military. During a historic snowstorm in January, these unsung heroes faced one of their toughest challenges yet, stepping up to ensure that the base remained functional and mission-ready. Their dedication and expertise kept essential and critical operations running, enabling our warfighters to focus on their vital work.
Dedication in Action
From Saturday to Wednesday, the Challenge Unlimited team worked long shifts, divided into day and night crews. The storm’s unforgiving mix of snow and ice layers pushed equipment and personnel to their limits. Despite these conditions, the team maintained operations with resilience and expertise.
Challenges and Solutions
This storm presented unique challenges:
- Getting to Work Safely: With snow and ice-covered roads, employees faced treacherous commutes. Team members with four-wheel-drive vehicles transported colleagues whose vehicles were stuck, ensuring everyone could report for duty safely.
- Specialized Mitigation: The storm’s combination of snow and ice required specialized techniques for removal and mitigation, as the snow just kept coming down. The team’s training in quality control and multi-tasking ensured effective results under challenging conditions.
- Working in Extreme Weather: Blizzard-like conditions and subzero temperatures added to the difficulty. Workers were supplied with high-visibility waterproof coats and gloves to keep everyone safe in low visibility conditions.
- Limited Access: With many base services shut down, employees had to bring their own supplies, including food, and access the base through different gates.
Team Sacrifices
The storm required extraordinary sacrifices from the grounds team and several members of the staff pushed back personal commitments to ensure they were there to help ensure that both military and civilian personnel on base stayed safe.
Operational Excellence
Despite subfreezing temperatures and heavy ice-packed snow, the team cleared sidewalks and designated parking lots, ensuring mission-critical logistics could continue. Their efforts highlight why government and business partners trust Challenge Unlimited for exceptional Facilities Management services.
Celebrating the Team
To show appreciation for their commitment and dedication, the grounds team will enjoy a well-deserved luncheon. Their exceptional efforts exemplify our mission values of helpfulness and leadership; as well as effective outcomes for the business and government customers that we serve.
