The Power of Sports: Zachary Arndt’s Journey from Special Olympics to Workplace Excellence

At Challenge Unlimited, we’re proud to celebrate stories of perseverance, growth, and opportunity. During this National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), we’re shining a light on Zachary Arndt, a recent nominee for the prestigious William M. Usdane Award. Zachary’s journey is not only about overcoming employment barriers, but also about how the skills he developed as a Special Olympics athlete have transferred to his workplace success.

From the Field to the Office: Transferable Skills

Before Zachary joined Challenge Unlimited in August 2023, his job didn’t allow him to fully utilize his potential. His previous role involved retrieving shopping carts and basic cleaning tasks. However, through his involvement in Special Olympics Ohio, Zachary had already been developing skills that prepared him for greater opportunities.

As a decorated athlete in soccer, golf, and flag football, Zachary learned discipline, focus, and teamwork—key skills he now applies in his work. In fact, in 2023, Zachary was chosen to lead athletes in reciting the Special Olympics oath at the Summer Games in Columbus. His ability to lead and perform under pressure on the field has translated into how he approaches challenges at work.

Zachary’s project manager, Rudy Christian, sees this impact firsthand. “Zach’s dedication to his sports carries over into his work. He’s disciplined, focused, and always willing to give his best. These qualities make him stand out on the job.”

A New Beginning at Challenge Unlimited

When Zachary joined Challenge Unlimited as part of the janitorial team at one of our GSA Contract Sites, his work ethic and leadership quickly became evident. His attention to detail and his willingness to support his coworkers make him an integral part of the team. “Zach steps up whenever someone needs help,” Rudy shared. “He’s always focused on getting the job done right and on time.”

While Zachary sometimes needs reminders about specific tasks, his adaptability and openness to feedback are some of his greatest strengths. “His willingness to learn and improve is a reflection of the patience and discipline he developed through sports,” Rudy explained.

Recognizing Zachary’s Growth and Leadership

Zachary’s journey didn’t just stop at excelling on the job. His leadership qualities and dedication to his work led to his recent nomination for the William M. Usdane Award, which recognizes individuals in the AbilityOne Program who show exceptional character, perseverance, and personal growth.

Although Zachary has yet to win the award, his nomination is a testament to how his skills—both from his athletic experience and his work—have set him apart. His success story speaks directly to NDEAM’s theme of “Access to Good Jobs for All.” Programs like AbilityOne give people like Zachary the opportunity to use their strengths to thrive.

The Power of Inclusive Employment

Zachary’s journey reminds us that inclusive employment isn’t just about offering jobs—it’s about providing the right environment for people to grow, apply their skills, and achieve success. His experience with Special Olympics didn’t just give him athletic achievements; it gave him the focus, teamwork, and leadership skills that now make him a star at Challenge Unlimited.

As we continue to celebrate NDEAM, Zachary’s story stands as an inspiring example of how access to meaningful work and inclusive practices can unlock potential and help individuals with disabilities excel in the workforce.
