Challenge Unlimited Attends SourceAmerica’s 2026 Grassroots Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C.

Team members from Challenge Unlimited had an amazing experience at SourceAmerica’s 2026 Grassroots Advocacy Conference, held September 14–17 in Washington, D.C., where they advocated for the AbilityOne Program, connected with congressional leaders and staff, and shared the importance of creating meaningful employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Representing the organization were Charlotte Hammond, President and CEO, and HR team members Tabitha Yates and Zac Smith. They were joined by special guests Dwayne Whitterson, Janitor at GSA Cincinnati and AbilityOne employee, and his wife, Shelby, helping bring a firsthand perspective to the importance of the AbilityOne Program.

During the conference, Dwayne had the opportunity to share that journey during the Celebration of Stories. By speaking about his experiences and ambitions, he advocated not only for himself but for others with disabilities, sharing a powerful message that challenges can be overcome and meaningful employment can open the door to greater independence and opportunity.

Throughout the conference, the Challenge Unlimited team took their message directly to Capitol Hill, meeting with congressional leaders and staff to share the impact of employment opportunities for people with disabilities and the importance of continued support for inclusive workplaces.

The team met with George Barber, Legislative Assistant for Congressman Warren Davidson (R-Ohio), a SourceAmerica Champion, as well as Yusuf Nekzad, Legislative Director for Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (D-Illinois), a strong advocate for people with disabilities and newly recognized SourceAmerica Champion.

Additional meetings included Kobe Walker, Legislative Assistant for Rep. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio), who recently received the 2026 Legislator of the Year Award from Disabled American Veterans, and Ben Monticello, Legislative Director for Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Illinois). The team also connected with Senator Jon Husted (R-Ohio) and Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) alongside representatives from other organizations.

A visit with Chase Kerr, Legislative Aide for Congressman Mike Bost, included a memorable opportunity for the group to step out on the balcony for a photo in front of the U.S. Capitol Building.

Each conversation provided an opportunity to share why employment matters, advocate for people with disabilities and help ensure their experiences and voices are represented in Washington, D.C.
